Do you sometimes see small spots or specks moving in your field of vision? Do you see flashes of light?
These occurrences are called floaters and flashes. While annoying, these instances are usually insignificant. However, in some cases, your floaters or flashes may be symptoms of a more serious eye problem such as retinal detachment. Retinal detachment requires immediate medical intervention.
If you are experiencing flashes or floaters, call us and let the competent team at Brian Mihok DO, Inc conduct a complete eye examination. We'll identify the cause of your flashes and floaters to make sure your vision is the best it can be.
Floaters may be seen as dots, lines, cobwebs, or spiders and are most often noticed when reading, looking at a blank wall, or gazing at a clear sky. They are usually the result of the aging process. They are common in nearsighted people, those who have suffered eye injuries, or after eye surgeries.
Although annoying, floaters are generally not vision-threatening and do not require treatment. However, it is best to have your floaters assessed. Be sure to tell Brian Mihok DO, Inc about floaters during your next visit and we'll make sure your vision is safe.
Flashes appear as flashing lights or lightning streaks in the field of vision, although no light is actually flashing. They are most often noticed at night or in a dark room. As with floaters, they are usually the result of the aging process and do not indicate a serious vision problem.
In some instances, flashes can occur with migraines. In these cases, the flashes may distort central vision for 10 to 20 minutes and appear as jagged lines or "heat waves" in both eyes.
Unless they represent the symptoms of a more serious condition, flashes do not require treatment. To be sure that your flashes are harmless, consult with Brian Mihok DO, Inc at your next visit.
